You Know Yourself Best

My client found journals that she'd written in over the past ten years. I asked if she ever read through them. She said she didn't. I asked if she could let them go.

My client felt stuck. She said, "But don't people keep their journals? Oprah probably keeps hers."

I said I didn't know what Oprah does, but the only person's opinion that mattered on whether something was clutter or not was her own. She knows best. No one else knows what she needs. They may think they do. Or she may think they do. But in the moment that she asks, "Do I like and use this, or can I let it go?" she is the expert.

She thought about it and said that she had no desire to read through the journals. They meant something to her when she wrote them, but not anymore.

She let them go.
