I said that since the journals were no longer an active, living part of her life, and didn't make her feel good, would she be okay about letting them go. She said she felt resistance, but wasn't sure why.
I said that something can be a helpful part of your life. But then at some point, it isn't anymore. It actually starts to cause harm. It can be hard to let the thing go because of the powerful memories of how valuable it once was. It can feel like you are throwing out something that is essential. But based on your actual experience in the moment, that's not true.
She reflected on her experience and said when she wrote in the journals, they helped her process difficult feelings. But now they just reminded her of old pains. They felt like a, "Bucket full of ick."
She let the journals go. Her face brightened up. She looked free.
Brooks, thank you for your wisdom and encouragement during the workshop! Having old journals that I never look at but also have a strong attachment too, I felt pain at the idea of this person at the workshop having to throw away her journals. No!! But seeing it your way really did make a lot of sense and I could feel the release from that weight. Great clutter busting!!!
ReplyDeleteAnna, I'm glad you felt some relief. That's what it's all about.
ReplyDeleteThis is such a timely post for me. One of the areas I need to clutter bust is are two small trunks in our guest room that contain old journals of mine. I have not looked at them in many years... 12, 15, 20. I know they contain some pictures I drew as well as writing, and they were an amazing support at difficult times in my life. BUT, as reality (i.e. my life as it is now) shows me, I no longer need or use those journals. Their usefulness to me is finished, so it is probably high time they left. They are cleverly hidden, the trunks housing them are antique and decorative, the room housing the journals is one that I do not spend much time in, so I'm not tripping over them every day, but I feel the pull of them after reading this post.
ReplyDeleteYou (Brooks) your client have inspired me to go visit those journals very soon and ask some questions. Thank you for the wonderful work that you do.
Best regards,
Kris McC.
Kris, I'm glad my post helped! I think you'll get some powerful freedom from taking that look!
